By xeno
I purchased this unit as a replacement for a failing factory CD/radio in our van. The unit itself looks great. The resolution of the screen is ok - It certainly looks a lot better in the pictures on the websites that I looked at when researching it. Ipod controls are also just ok - I would expect a smoother and quicker interface for something with such a big touchscreen. Their isn't any smooth scrolling through playlists, and the load times are a bit sluggish, but I would assume this comes from relying heavily on the Ipod/Iphone for info and not loading anything into memory for use on the unit. DVD works well, no problems, interface was standard and easy to use. Also was able to play video from the Iphone on the unit as well.
One of the main draws of this unit was the fact that you could use the Garmin Nav app with the Iphone and view the map and directions on the touchscreen, plus hear the directions through the speakers in the car. Be aware of the costs involved:
1. Garmin Onboard Nav App - fifty bucks
2. Garmin External Screen Add on (required for viewing the maps on the unit) - fifty bucks
3. Kenwood Ipod cable (required for viewing any video or nav on the unit) - thirty bucks
Everything works fine, but Garmin really gets you on the add-on for viewing maps on an external screen. The documentation doesn't mention it on the sites I researched when purchasing it, but it does say so on Kenwood's site (though doesn't mention it doubles the cost of the app). If this feature doesn't interest you, then don't worry about it. If it does, then be prepared to invest to use it.
All in all it is a good head unit. The hidden costs makes it a 3 star unit in my opinion, but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt and put 4 on it for the time being, blaming myself for not looking at it even closer than I did.

Great radio and great price... This radio has lots of goodies on it. Big screen. This is the lowest of the Kenwood DDX series and it is limted in some areas. All in all im gonna keep it until it dies. Also works well with a sub system. Very satisfied. The only reason I gave this four stars is for the lack of nav.
